"saippuakivikauppias" is a Finnish word, meaning 'soapstone vendor'. It is a 19-letter and the longest palindromic word to be used in everyday language. It is also mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records.
A palindrome is a word or phrase, which can even be read backwards and still mean the same. For example, "kayak" is read as "kayak" when your read the letters from the right to left too. It originated in Greece and was coined by the English playwright, Ben Johnson, in the 17th century from the Greek word, palíndromos, which means, "running back again".
The origin of palindromes can be dated back to 79 CE. The first palindrome that was discovered in the form of a graffito was, "Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas". Records of palindromic words and phrases were also found in Sanskrit and Hebrew literature. Let us first take a look at some miscellaneous examples of palindromes.

There are various types of palindromes, that include, word palindromes, phrase palindromes, number palindromes, name palindromes, and date palindromes. January 2, 2010 is a date palindrome. When used in mm/dd/yy format, the date can be given as "01/02/2010" and the date can be read exactly the same backward.
Even February 1, 2010 is a date palindrome when used in dd/mm/yy format. Another such date palindrome is "11/02/2011".
A palindromic number is a number whose digits form the same number even when they are read backwards. Example, 25352, 141, etc. A palindrome is not limited to just numbers and words, and you will be amused to know that some people have palindromic names too!
