List of Adjectives

Shalu Bhatti
Adjectives are an important part of our everyday speech and can be described as the 'describing' words which define the quality, quantity, or kind of the associated noun or pronoun. Check out this list of adjectives that are commonly used.
An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun to provide a descriptive information about it. In simple words, it helps to describe the following.
  • The quantity
  • The kind
  • Which one is it?
Mentioned here are some examples of adjectives to help you understand them in a better way.

1: I have a yellow car. Yellow is the adjective here as it describes the car (noun).

2: She sat on a wooden chair. Wooden is the adjective as it describes the kind of chair (noun).

3
: She is beautiful. Beautiful is the adjective as it describes the girl.

Types of Adjectives

Descriptive Adjectives

These are the ones that are used to describe the noun. For example, A tall man, A red bike, A spooky place. The italicized words describe the noun that follows and therefore are a perfect example of descriptive adjectives.

Limiting Adjectives

These describe the noun in terms of quantity. An example for the same would be, "There are eleven players in a cricket team." The word eleven is an adjective as it answers the question 'how many' and tells us the quantity.

Predicate Adjectives

These are a little tricky to catch. Just remember that predicate adjectives ultimately describe the noun but always follow a linking word. An example to understand them better would be, "the boys are excited to watch the game." Excited is the predicate adjective as it describes the noun (boys).

Verbal Adjectives

When certain verbals are used as adjectives, they fall under this category. An example for the same would be, "My daughter is driven to dance well in the competition." Participles ending with 'en, ing, or ed' are verbal adjectives.

Personal Adjectives

Words such as 'Mrs, Mr, Miss, Auntie, Uncle, Dr', and the like, are personal adjectives when a name follows them. An example would be, "I am going to visit Dr. Smith this Monday." When Dr. is followed by a name (noun), it becomes a personal adjective.
